My adventure begins with a visit to Saguaro National Park, where the iconic saguaro cacti stand tall against the backdrop of the desert landscape. As I wander along the scenic trails, I am surrounded by the tranquility of the desert, with the majestic saguaros casting long shadows in the morning sun.

I stopped at the visitors center to find out more about this incredible park. The ranger was delightfully quick to offer a map and highlight a lovely drive along a well-maintained fire road. She pointed out a couple of hikes to do along the route and a stunning spot to enjoy the sunset at the end of the day. Be sure to bring your camera, proper hydration, and sunscreen to enjoy the beauty of this unique ecosystem.

Day 2: Savoring Local Flavors

Today, I head to Colossal Cave Mountain Park, a hidden gem located just a short drive from Tucson. Embark on a guided tour of the caverns, marveling at the intricate rock formations and learning about the cave’s fascinating history. As I emerge from the depths, I was greeted by breathtaking views of the surrounding desert, a testament to the awe-inspiring beauty of nature. From here I was able to tour the other side of the Saguaro National Park as I drove back to Tucson.

After finding a parking spot in downtown, I immersed myself in the city’s rich cultural heritage with a visit to this vibrant area. I enjoyed my stroll along historic Congress Street, where colorful murals adorn the walls of eclectic shops and galleries. Explore the bustling Mercado San Agustin, a vibrant market filled with artisanal goods and local treasures. 

Later, I embark on a culinary journey through Tucson, starting with dinner at Caruso’s Italian Food, a beloved local eatery known for its authentic dishes and warm hospitality. Indulge in classic Italian fare, from hearty pasta dishes to mouthwatering pizzas, all made with fresh, locally sourced ingredients.

After dinner, I venture to the Surly Wench on 4th Street, a lively bar where locals and visitors alike gather to unwind and enjoy a wide selection of craft beers and cocktails. I am sad I didn’t get a chance to sample some local beer at one of the many inviting breweries around downtown. However, I must raise a glass to Tucson’s vibrant nightlife scene as I soak in the eclectic atmosphere and mingle with fellow travelers.

I always dreamed of visiting Yosemite National Park, but found it impossible to get a campsite or a reservation at the hotel. As a result, I had to find a different way to make my dreams a reality. Enter the charming town of Mariposa.

Considered a gateway to Yosemite National Park, your journey begins in Mariposa with a scenic ride on the Yart. As you traverse the picturesque landscapes, anticipation builds for the natural wonders awaiting in the heart of the park.

Upon reaching Yosemite, check out the hotel within the park, offering unparalleled proximity to the breathtaking landscapes. I recommend starting your adventure with a refreshing cocktail at the hotel’s lounge, savoring the ambiance and planning the exploration ahead.

For hiking enthusiasts, discover the trails near the hotel. The Mist Trail, with its mist-kissed waterfalls, provides a thrilling ascent. The majestic Yosemite Falls and the iconic Half Dome offer awe-inspiring views, captivating every nature lover’s heart.

Nashville knows how to party!

If you are looking for a place to spend some quality drinking time with friends or family Nashville is the place. I have been wanting to go to Nashville for a very long time. I heard it was a fun place to with lots of live music. I was not prepared for all that Nashville brings to the table.

We flew into Nashville direct from LAX on Spirit Airlines. I must admit we were quite spirited by the time we arrived in Nashville. The crew was delightful. They greeted all passengers with warmth and kindness. The passengers were in the mood to party. There were groups of friends and families going to Nashville to celebrate all sorts of occasions from bachelorette parties to family reunions. Once the drink cart came down the aisle the festive spirit kicked into overdrive. People were having so much fun they burst into applause when the plane landed because they couldn’t wait to move the party to the next location.

We grabbed an Uber and headed into downtown. We had a room booked at the Cambria hotel on 8th st. What a perfect location! It’s close enough to Broadway to walk to all of the Holy Tonks, but it’s far enough away that you don’t feel the chaos of the Honky Tonks. It’s close enough to The Gulch to walk and enjoy the food, but it’s far enough away that you don’t have to pay The Gulch prices for a hotel room. Also, the gyro stand across the street has the best gyros I’ve eaten outside of Greece. This proved to be extremely beneficial every night after a long evening of imbibing.

I might just be getting old, but I feel that nothing prepares you for the sounds and smells of Broadway on a Friday or Saturday night. Keep in mind that I have spent a New Year’s Eve on Bourbon Street and I was still not prepared for the excitement and chaos that encompasses Broadway. Both sides of the street are lined with honky tonk bars and each one has one band per story playing at the highest volume! I see why the rooftop bars are so popular. They get you away from the chaos and allow you a bird’s eye view of the excitement below.

There’s so much more to Nashville than Honky Tonks and Moonshine. Although, I’m not complaining about either of those wonderful things! While we were there we were able to enjoy a delightful 80s themed burlesque show in Printer’s Alley at Skulls Rainbow Room. The atmosphere was inviting and the drinks were delicious. The place gets packed so make sure you get there early!

If you care for something a little slower, there is a wonderful Jazz room in The Gulch area of town. According to the hostess, it was started because the family that owns it was originally from New Orleans and when they relocated to Nashville they quickly realized there was no place for jazz musicians to play when they came into town. They solved the problem with the establishment of Rudy’s Jazz Room. The cocktails are delicious, the musicians are phenomenal, and you can’t find the vibe anywhere else in Nashville.

There is so much to do and see in Nashville. We spent a week there and barely scratched to surface. If you want my advice, grab your group of friends or your favorite family members and head out on the next Spirit flight to Nashville to create some unforgettable memories!
